Dr. Muhammad Bakr Ghbeis is the President of C4SSA

Dr. Muhammad Bakr Ghbeis is the President of C4SSA. Dr. Ghbeis was born and raised in the Damascus suburbs. As a youth, he volunteered in peaceful political activities in Damascus, advocating for civil rights and political transition to democratic governance. He graduated from Damascus University’s School of Medicine and immigrated to the U.S. in the early 2000s. Dr. Ghbeis works as cardiac critical care physician and instructor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. He has volunteered for several American NGOs including the Syrian Expatriates Organization, the Syrian American Medical Society, the Union of Medical Care and various relief organizations. He traveled to Syria and the region during the early years of the crisis to experience first-hand the medical and socio-political conditions on the ground, helping to defeat extremist ideologies and expose abuses of the humanitarian assistance system. As a result of his active role in speaking out against the atrocities and defeating extremism in Syria, several family members of Dr. Ghbeis’ were imprisoned and were intimidated by senior Assad regime officials. Dr Ghbeis penned several OpEds to explain to the American public the views of syrian americans for what is going on in Syria, and the ideas of the way forward particularly surrounding USG engagement.
